Metal Museum

The Metal Museum is the only museum of its kind in the country dedicated to preserving, promoting, and advancing the art and craft of fine metalwork. The Museum engages the metals community and the surrounding region through exhibitions, collections, studio practice, and community education and engagement. The permanent collection and exhibition program reflect a wide range and mixture of metalsmithing, including ferrous and nonferrous metals, hollowware, jewelry, enamelware, sculpture, and architectural elements. With its unique focus on artwork and fine crafts made in metal, the Metal Museum helps initiate and promote dialogue and understanding the field and its relevance in our modern culture.

Education and Outreach Manager

The Education and Outreach Manager supports the Museum’s education and outreach efforts through educational programming, public demonstrations, and community engagement. This role oversees mobile and onsite outreach programs, metalworking demonstrations, and workforce development initiatives. They are also responsible for the planning and coordination of all Metals Studio classes in blacksmithing, casting, and welding. The Education and Outreach Manager works closely with the Director of Education & Outreach and Metal Studios staff to deliver high-quality, accessible instruction across all large metalworking disciplines.

Instructor

The mission of Groundworks Art Lab is to cultivate the artist in each of us by inviting creative collaboration in the study, practice, and advancement of the studio arts. Instructors are the front-line in realizing this mission by providing excellent hands-on education and exceptional artistic experiences for Groundworks Art Lab students. Instructors also lead the advancement of the arts by pursuing innovation and experimenting with different techniques. As stewards, instructors are charged with maintaining the spirit and quality of the program while also identifying creative opportunities to improve the organization so that it may serve future generations.

Assistant Professor in Metals

The Department of Art and Visual Culture in the College of Design at Iowa State University is offering a full-time tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Metals starting August 2026.

Qualified candidates will bring an in-depth knowledge in metal craft, art, design, and related materials and practices. Areas of expertise will include contemporary and traditional techniques embracing sculptural and functional approaches to making. Special attention will be given to candidates who bring an innovative approach to metalsmithing and/or jewelry making, along with a critical knowledge of related materials to their teaching and creative work. Candidates with ethical and environmentally responsible approaches to their discipline and teaching are strongly encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will have opportunities to contribute to teaching in the department of Art and Visual Culture and the interdisciplinary collegiate programs in the College of Design. The position includes working with students from a broad range of disciplinary backgrounds and abilities. Pedagogically adaptive and innovative approaches in teaching are expected. The position responsibilities also include scholarship and research in the area of the candidate’s expertise; student advising; service on department, college and university committees; and maintenance of the metals studio and related equipment.

Director of Collections & Exhibitions

To supervise the presentation of artwork on loan to the Museum from other institutions and private collectors and in the Museum’s collections through in-house temporary exhibitions, outside travelling exhibitions, and permanent exhibitions. To supervise the documentation and preservation of the Museum’s intellectual and physical collections, library holdings, and archives through routine registration duties and development and management of collections and special projects.

This position will also serve as part of a leadership team overseeing the overall wellbeing and growth of the
Museum as it transitions into its new facilities in 2026. This includes, but is not limited to, moving the permanent collection to the new location, developing the exhibition schedule, and overseeing the art commission and installation of the sculpture walk.

Communications Specialist

SNAG seeks a motivated, energetic individual to serve in the role of Communications Specialist. This remote, part-time position reports to the Executive Director (ED), and works closely with the Operations Manager. While the Communications Specialist works collaboratively with the SNAG Team, the position is self-directed. The Communications Specialist is responsible for maintaining and initiating public-facing communications and content strategy for the organization and facilitating administrative communication.

We are hiring a part-time administrative, Studio Manager, position at RED Metal. We are looking to hire one individual to support our artist and owner, Rachel David, with client management, business operations, gallery contracts, and public projects and grants. The Studio Manager position is for someone who is prepared and able to be Rachel’s “Boss”. She needs someone to work remotely alongside her and manage deadlines, assignments, communications, and administration. This essential role allows Rachel to reserve her time for design and production so she and the business can excel. One of our goals as a business is to keep Rachel’s focus on making work!

Stuart Shirley, an instructor at Groundworks Art Lab in Boulder Colorado, is looking for a TA for his class Iron For the Garden. No experience necessary, this position is a learning opportunity. This position is unpaid.
The class will take place every Thursday, 5-8pm from April 10-24.

Internships and Apprenticeships

The purpose of the apprenticeships are to assist the Metals Studio with commissioned projects and classes, to serve as an ambassador of the Metal Museum and the metalworking community, and to advance design, fabrication, and business skills.

The Metal Museum offers artist internships in blacksmith, foundry work and repair/restoration of fine metal objects and sculptures. These positions offer artists invaluable experiential learning that is meant to expand their professional and practical skills. We are specifically seeking a Fine Metals Intern to join our Repair and Restoration Department under the guidance of Kevin Burge during the Summer 2025 internship period. Smithy & Foundry interns will be considered for Fall 2025.

Blacksmith Teaching Opportunity

Colorado Rocky Mountain School is seeking a blacksmithing arts educator to cultivate creativity, effective art studio habits, and an ethos of excellence. This educator must teach and model craft, collaboration, and safety in the forge. Teaching responsibilities include our afternoon active blacksmithing work crew and a 10-day Interim intensive in February. In addition to teaching, this blacksmith will oversee our smithing program and maintain The Mountain Forge, an outstanding facility established by Francis Whitaker in 1988.
